Spontaneous spring leaf, just for fun.
MEarth started as a design for an "M" person who loved the color green. As I began selecting just the right glass though, I began to see the piece in a different light. At the bottom center is the black iron core of the earth, then a layer of molten lava beneath rich brown soil, aquamarine waters and blue flowers, all surrounded by lush green forest with various moods of sky colors above to complete the cycle. And the final surprise, the entire sculpture conceals the face of an angry rattlesnake. See if you can spot it.
I began making these brightly colored leaves with scrap glass mostly to practice my copper foiling skills. I enjoyed the freedom of doing them with no pattern, each one spontaneous and unique in both shape and color. I loved them so much that they became the basis for the glass and metal mobile "Renewal". Read the description of "Renewal" here in the gallery.
"Ocho" was created in honor of my bilingual grandson who caused quite a commotion when he was born eight days early! The colors were chosen because Ochito has brown eyes with a blue corneal ring.
This whimsical piece started as an effort to use previously cut scraps of glass to make an 8" x 8" square. I only made a handful of minor cuts to make it all fit. a few days after it was finished, I noticed that I can see the abstract shapes of a handful of US states, starting with Nevada in purple on the left. How many can you spot? Given the whimsical shapes combined with the divided nature of our political views in 2024, it seemed natural to title it "Fractured States".
"Renewal" is a stained glass and brass mobile commissioned by and donated to Bastrop County Cares, a local 501(c)(3) dedicated to finding resources and organizing community services targeted toward underserved communities in Bastrop County, Texas. The leaves, buds and flowers are symbolic of change and renewal both in nature and in human endeavor. The brass bars, chains and shapes complete the diversity of the piece and celebrates the beauty of diversity within our local Bastrop County community. "Renewal" can be seen in the lobby of Bastrop County Cares, 806 Water Street, Bastrop Tx. "Renewal" is a joint creation with fellow artist Catherine Pressler.
"Wedgies" started as idle doodling on 8.5" x 11" grid paper. It translated well to this 8" x 10" creation using copper foil and zinc frame.
"TP" was done for a friend with those initials and is one of my first efforts using fused glass. It is 8" x 10", using Bullseye Glass sheets, stringers, ribbon and frit. I love the versatility of this medium and l frequently incorporate fused glass elements into my stained glass panels to give them more color, richness, texture and dimension.
This 3" fused glass orb is the centerpiece for "Icarus", which is also shown and described here in the gallery. The orb comprises three layers of red bullseye glass with various sizes and colors of frit and confetti between and atop the layers and fully fused with a thickness of 9 millimeters. I tried to capture the richness, complexity and fury of the sun. There may even be remnants of the wax-winged flyer himself should one look and imagine.
"Icarus" came to me as I worked one August day in the blazing Central Texas sun. I could see the heat waves like super-charged plasma, and feel the scorching skin pricks from millions of mini-micro solar neutrinos, leptons, muons, and other solar stuff. I felt like the wax winged flyer himself until I struggled back to air conditioned safety. My vision is all captured very nicely in the colors, textures and arrangement of the plasma rays.
The fused 9mm fiery center orb combined with the shapes, textures and colors of the 3mm plasma rays to produce a stunning three dimensional piece which captures the spirit, courage and folly of Icarus himself.
A decidedly not glass charcutery board because why not?
"Pecker Tech" is a cardinal done for a retired Lamar University professor. When I was growing up in the late '50s and early '60s, students from rival schools claimed the school's mascot cardinal looked more like a woodpecker, hence Pecker Tech.
"sonRise" is a commission done for a man whose son's first initial is R. The bright colors, contrasting angles and the complex directional flow bring to mind for me the exuberance of youth. 10" x 10" copper foil with zinc frame.
"Psychedelic Sunset" is a whimsical companion to "Icarus" using a similar 9mm thick fused glass orb. the sunray elements are based on the colors painted on a hippie bus I once drove. The symbols are created with glass frit and powder fused to the sunray elements. 12" x 12" with 5/32" lead came and lead frame.
This view of "Psychedelic Sunset" highlights the complex interplay among the 9 mm center orb, the thinner 3 mm rays and heaviness of the lead came, all combining to give it a definite early-70s look. 12" x 12" with 5/32" lead came and frame.
4MRock is my first piece using frit painting. Mediocre though it is in my eyes, it was a great learning experience. In real life the rock is in the front yard of some friends in New Hampshire. It covers around 1600 sq ft, about the footprint of a small house, rises 3'-4' above the surrounding lawn, with birch and aspen obscuring all but the outline of Mount Cannon in the background. Watch for future fit-painting pieces as I perfect my technique. 8" x12", fused Bullseye glass, frit, powder, stringers and confetti.
Portal 6633 is an 8' x 11 1/2" seven piece, traditional leaded glass panel with a 21st century twist using a fused glass element as the focal point. Fused glass is not a modern invention, but only recently has the technique been widely available to the broad population of artists. The central element was made using a fusing technique called "boiled glass" which transfers colors and patterns in unique and surprising ways. The boiled glass slab was then sliced and fused again along with 3mm glass into this pattern bar. These colors and pattern reminded me of the Aurora Borealis, and I soon imagined myself atop Mount Denali, the ancient name, floating through the portal beside the lights, into another time, another universe, another state of matter, another....?
